2008

  • July: Hosted by Viterbo University, The Balanced Pianist Wisconsin 2008 will be a 6-day program of intensive and interactive work with pianists Teresa Dybvig and Susan Nowicki, Alexander Instructor Diane Foust, and a special program by Gulchin Tarabus. The program will run from July 25 through 30 at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisonsin. For program information and registration, click here.
  • July: In Cooperation with Colorado Christian University, The Balanced Pianist Colorado 2008 will be a 6-day program of intensive and interactive work with pianists Teresa Dybvig and Susan Nowicki, and Aston-Patterning specialist Judy Huston. The program will run from July 10 through 15 in Lakewood, Colorado, near Denver. For program information and registration, click here.
  • May: Director and Piano Instructor Teresa Dybvig will present "Assessment of a retraining program in improving pianists' involuntary movements," a study by Teresa Dybvig and Nina Scolnik of their students with dystonia, tremors, and other involuntary movements, at the 12th European Congress on Musician's Medicine/3rd International Congress on Musician's Medicine at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music in Milan, Italy.
  • March: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki gave a talk, "The Balanced Pianist," for Philadelphia Music Teachers, in Jacobs Music, 1708 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Wednesday, March 27 at 10 am (free to members, nominal fee for non-members).
  • February: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed music of Krzywicki, Hsu, Ewazen, and Plogh with Carol Jantsch, Principal Tubist of Philadelphia Orchestra in the Rock Hall Auditorium at Temple University in Philadelphia on Sunday, February 24 at 3 p.m.
  • February: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed music of Poulenc, Hindemith, Shen, and Cohen with oboist Fredric T. Cohen and bassoonist Stephen Walt in the Bezanson Recital Hall at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst on Sunday, February 10 at 8 p.m.

2007

  • December: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki celebrated Beethoven's birthday with students of Curtis Institute! They performed the early song cycle An die Ferne Geliebte and selections from Fidelio in the Field Concert Hall at Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia on Wednesday December 12 at 8 p.m.
  • December: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed Poulenc Sextet on the Dolce Suono Chamber Music Concert Series on Wednesday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the 1st Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia.
  • October: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed Luca Antignani's octet, "Il viaggio di Humbert" at the Network for New Music concert in Rose Recital Hall at UPenn (Fisher-Bennet Hall, 4th Floor) on Sunday, October 14 2007 at 3:00 pm.
  • September: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed music by Mahler, Britten, Handel, Mozart, and Rossini with mezzo-soprano Misoon Ghim in Rock Hall at Temple University, on Thursday, September 27 at 7:30 pm.
  • August: Teresa Dybvig presented a poster on Habits Common to Pianists with Dystonia and other Involuntary Movements at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Oakbrook, IL (just outside Chicago), on August 2-4, 2007.

  • April: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed Jan Krzywicki's Partita with oboist Fredric Cohen at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, 251 S 18th Street, on April 30 at 7:30 p.m.
  • April: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed music by Saint Saens, Honegger, and Enescu with tubist Carol Jantsch and trumpeter Francisco Flores at the Musical Olympus Festival at Zankel Hall on April 15 at 7:30 pm.
  • April: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed Saint-Saens Cello Concerto with tubist Carol Jantsch on the Philadelphia Orchestra's Postlude Recital on Friday, April 13 at approximately 4:30 p.m. (after the 2 p.m. orchestra concert -- featuring Pyotr Anderszewski playing Szymanowski, this was also worth hearing!).
  • March: Director and Piano Instructor Teresa Dybvig performed Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata and other works for violin and piano with fantastic violinist Linda Sinanian on Friday, March 30, 2007 at 7 PM at the North Shore Public Library.   • February: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed a recital with oboist Fredric Cohen of works by Berkeley, Macchia, Elgar, Bennett, and Rubbra on Sunday, February 25 at 8 p.m. at Bezanson Hall at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
  • February: An article by The Balanced Pianist Director Teresa Dybvig on similarities in habits among pianists with dystonia, essential tremor, and other involuntary movements appears in the February issue of Clavier magazine. You can find it under the vague title, "Moving Naturally," selected by the editors more for its space-saving benefit than for its indication of the content. The article contains some photos of coordinate and incoordinate alignment, and descriptions of habits among these pianists of alignment and movement in the shoulders, wrist, knuckles, and fingers, and some suggestions for correcting them.   • February: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed Melinda Wagner's Trio No.2: “Romanze with Faux Variations,” with violinist Hirono Oka and cellist Ohad Bar-David on the Philadelphia Orchestra's Postlude Recital on Thursday, February 1 at approximately 10 p.m. (after the orchestra concert!).
  • January: Director and Piano Instructor Teresa Dybvig performed solo music by Messiaen and Janacek, and music by Beethoven and Vaughn Williams with fantastic violinist Linda Sinanian on Margarethe Maimone's creative concert series, Ridotto, on Sunday January 7, at 4 pm.   • January: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki pesented "Technique-ease", hosted by The Piano Teachers Forum of Central NJ, on Friday, January 5, 2007, 10 am, at Jacobs Music, Business Route 1 at Texas Ave., Lawrenceville, NJ.

2006

  • November 17 & 18: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed Orff's "Carmina Burana", with Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, on November 17 and 18 at 8 pm, at Girard College.
  • November 10 & 12: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed John Harbison's "North and South" with Janice Felty, mezzo soprano, at Network for New Music on Friday, November 10, 8 pm, at Haverford College; and on Sunday, November 12, 3 pm, at Settlement Music School, 416 Queen Street, Philadelphia.
  • October: Lessons with Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki in Golden, CO on October 20 and 21. If you are interested in lessons that weekend, please contact The Balanced Pianist.
  • July: In Cooperation with Colorado Christian University, The Balanced Pianist Colorado 2006 was a 6-day program of intensive and interactive work with pianists Teresa Dybvig and Susan Nowicki, and Aston-Patterning specialist Judy Huston (3-day and 4-day program options were also available). The program ran from July 6 through 11 in Lakewood, Colorado, near Denver, and was attended by 30 pianists from 8 states. See our scrapbook.
  • June: The Balanced Pianist web site is reviewed in the "Annotated Bibliography on Musician Wellness" in the June/July issue of American Music Teacher, the journal of Music Teachers National Association.
  • April: Piano Instructor Susan Nowicki performed music by Jan Krzywicki and Andrew McPherson in the Network for New Music concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 23 at the Mary Louise Curtis Branch of the Settlement Music School on 416 Queen Street in Philadelphia, PA. The program was repeated, free of charge, at Taplin Auditorium in Princeton University on Tuesday, April 25 at 8 pm.
  • March: Teresa Dybvig's recording of Louise Talma's Piano Sonata no. 1 was broadcast on Saturday, March 25 on the “Modern Masterpieces,” produced by Alan Chapman at Classical Public Radio Network this weekend. Modern Masterpieces aired at 10 pm Saturday evening, and was also available with live feed on Pacific time on KUSC. Some of the stations in the Classical Public Radio Network that usually carry Modern Masterpieces include WBHM-Birmingham, KVOD-Denver, KUSC-LA WBNI-Fort Wayne, IN WFSQ-Tallahasee WNIU-DeKalb WOSU-Columbus, OH, and Public Radio Tulsa.

2005

  • August: Teresa Dybvig presented a poster on Strengthening Musical Memory Using the Dunn & Dunn Learning Styles Perceptual Modalities at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Oakbrook, IL (just outside Chicago), on August 3-6, 2005.
  • March: Teresa Dybvig presented a program on Avoiding Performance Anxiety at the March meeting of the Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation. Dr. Dybvig shared her ideas about helping students perform their best on March 2, 2005, from 10 am - noon at the Middle Country Library Cultural Center on Rte. 25 in Selden, NY.
  • January: The Balanced Pianist Workshop. Elmhurst College presented three days of intensive and cooperative work in Elmhurst, Illinois, Friday, January 7 through Sunday, January 9. For details please click here.

2004

  • November 20 and 21: The Balanced Pianist Weekend Seminar. One and a half days of intensive and cooperative work at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center of Huntington on Route 110 in Melville, New York. Instructors were Dr. Dybvig and Yoga instructor Carol Burns. For details please click here.
  • February 28 and 29: The Search for Balance, a weekend seminar on balanced movement at the piano in a balanced state of mind, on February 28 and 29, at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center of Huntington on Route 110 in Melville, New York.

2003

  • The first Piano Camp at Setauket was held from June 26 to July 1. Twelve pianists from 4 states and Australia attended the week-long intensive. The lead instructor was Teresa Dybvig, Carol Burns was the Yoga instructor, and Susan Nowicki was the guest artist/clinician.
  • Dr. Dybvig was the guest artist/clinician at the North Dakota MTA Convention, October 31 through November 2. She played a recital of works by Bach, Schumann, Messiaen, and Haydn at the Belle Mehus Auditorium on October 31, and gave a talk, clinics, and master classes on Dorothy Taubman's approach to Piano Technique, on November 1 and 2.
